The tournament took place today, Saturday February 26, 2011 at the Mililani Town Center, outdoors in the Gazebo. It was a beautiful sunny day with temperatures in the upper 70s. Geoffrey Pang was the organizer and sponsor, and Bob Newell was the tournament director.

There were 11 players in the Keiki (children's) section. The winner was Jordan Sergent and the runner-up was Daniel Munoz. I don't have a good cross-table because the kids had some problems in reporting their scores and I had to make some judgments. Play was 4-round Swiss system, 2 games per round, GAYP.

There were 4 players in the Adult section (a little disappointing).  Anthony Bishop came from Tennessee to vacation and play! The cross-table is attached; we did a round-robin with 2 games (GAYP) per round. Anthony Bishop was the overall winner. Steven Hoo was the high-scoring Hawai`i resident and is declared state champion. Runner up is Leona Sewake.

I need to sort out my dozens of photos and will send both of you a half-dozen of the best ones tomorrow (Sunday) Hawaiian time.

First prize in the children's division was a $50 gift certificate. Second prize was a $25 gift certificate.

In the adult division, Mr. Bishop declined to accept his prize money, generously asking that it instead go to Hawaiian residents. Mr. Hoo was awarded a $100 gift certificate and Ms. Sewake, a $50 gift certificate.

Mr. Pang, the organizer, is to be congratulated for raising $225 in prize money for a tournament that had no entry fee.

Keiki (pronounced "kay-key") is the Hawaiian word for "baby" or "child", literally meaning "the little one".
